Ceylon stitch

Work a series of long straight stitches horizontally across the top edge of the shape to be embroidered, from A to B. Bring the needle at out C. Slip it under the initial straight stitch, going over the thread when it comes out close to C. The needle should not enter the fabric. Continue making stitch loops in this way, working across the straight stitch from left to right. End the stitching. Begin the next row of stitches back at the left edge, this time slipping the needle behind the loops in the first row. When all the required rows have been stitched, use small stitches in the loops of the bottom row to hold them flat against the fabric.
