Extended ribbon stitch

Bring the ribbon to the front at the base of the stitch. Keeping it loose and untwisted, lay the ribbon along the stitch line and beyond, pinning it in place temporarily if the line curves or changes direction. At the end of the stitch, take the needle down through the centre of the ribbon and pull it through gently, allowing it to curl slightly at the tip. Using one strand of matching thread, couch the stitch in place with invisible holding stitches where it changes direction or to prevent it drooping when the item is hung. The effect of the stitch is diminished if the ribbon is too taut.
